Obituary : Caleb Smith
Once again the death angel has came in our midst and called home Caleb
Smith. He was born April 6, 1824 near Charlottsville, Indiana, and died
March 31, 1902 at his home four miles north of Glen Elder, Kansas. Age 77
yr. 11 mo. 24 da. He was married to Mary J. Orr, June 20, 1849 and moved to
Kansas from Iowa sixteen years ago, he leaves a wife and six children to
mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Two of the daughters
reside in Mo., one son in Idaho, one in Washington and two daughters here. A
brother and nephew of the deceased from Centralia was present at the funeral.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Christian cnurch and was a faithful christian
through life. About two weeks before his death he told his wife; "Mother
I saw my Savior and talked with him and he says it is all right." Mr.
Smith was loved by all and was a great favorite among the children. The
funeral services were held April 1, at ten A.M. conducted by Rev. Drummond of
Downs, Kans. He was followed to his last resting place at Granite Creek
Cemetery by a large procession of friends and neighbors. The bereaved ones
have sympathy of all in the hour of their affliction.
