Pioneer Woman of Pipestone Dies - 1944
Mrs. E. S. Butman Succumbed Following Fall
Funeral Thursday, May 30
Mrs. E. S. Butman, a pioneer resident of Pipestone county, died Sunday
morning about 11 o'clock at Ashton Memorial Hospital. She had been in
failing health the past five years and was confined to her home most of that
time. Friday morning she fell and fractured her left hip and she was taken
to the hospital for treatment. She was 83 years old. Funeral services will
be held Thursday afternoon, May 30, at 2 o'clock, at the Jorgenson-Jones
funeral home and at 2:30 at the Presbyterian Church, with Rev. F.J. Petersen
officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Anna Mary Elizabeth
Stellpflug was born in Trempealeau County, Wis., May 4, 1863. She was united
in marriage on New Year's Day, 1883, to Eugene S. Butman and he brought her
to his homestead in Troy township in this county to reside. She endured with
him the many hardships of the early pioneer days and also made many lasting
friendships. The couple made their home in Troy township until 1918, when
they retired from farming and moved into Pipestone and have since made their
home here. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Butman celebrated their
wedding anniversary with a family gathering on New Year's Day and the
celebration was an event which both looked forward to with a great deal of
pleasure. She is survived by her husband, four children, one brother, one
sister, 18 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Four children preceded
her in death. The surviving children are: Mrs. Nettie Praske, Leroy Butman,
Hiram Butman of Pipestone, and Stark Butman of Ward, S.D.; the sister, Mrs.
Minnie Marsh, LaCrosse, Wis.; and the brother, Herman Stellpflug of Guernsey,
Wyoming. Mrs. Nettie Praske, who left several weeks ago to visit with
relatives at points on the west coast, was called home and she and her
daughter, Loretta Praske of Alameda, Calif. are expected to arrive here
Wednesday evening.
